The lale — the tulip — is the signature motif of Ottoman ebru; the three hearts stand beside it as a motif of their own. Both are made on the water: colour is dropped onto the surface and drawn into shape with a fine stylus, and the paper lifts the image in one motion. The sage ground and the strong pink-and-turquoise border are two separate passes that only meet when the sheet is mounted — which is why no two borders ever land on quite the same tone. Made on acid-free ebru paper with natural pigments and ox gall.
