Two techniques meet in this piece. The tulip is floral ebru: colour is placed on the water drop by drop and drawn into a blossom with a fine stylus. The border is a şal pattern — the colour is led through the water with a comb, in waves, until the dense feathering that gives the pattern its name appears. Both are lifted from the water in a single motion and cannot be repeated. The strong magenta with violet and gold is set deliberately against the quiet sage grey at the centre. Made on acid-free ebru paper with natural pigments and ox gall.
